Election & Campaign Finance Law

With more than seven decades’ combined experience as attorneys, government officials, and candidates, the attorneys of Murphy Orlando LLC offer industry-leading election and campaign finance counsel in New Jersey.

Our attorneys’ past engagements include serving as New Jersey counsel for a 2020 Presidential campaign; on the Democratic National Committee’s team in the longest-running Voting Rights Act litigation in the United States (DNC v. RNC); and as compliance counsel for U.S. Senate, Congressional and local campaigns, as well as county and local Democratic organizations. We have litigated and advised on ballot design, ballot access, post-election disputes, recalls, and recount litigation for local candidates across New Jersey. We’ve counseled party leaders on governance and compliance matters, trained attorneys to protect voting rights at the polls, and defended candidates and campaigns in N.J. Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) administrative actions. The attorneys of Murphy Orlando LLC are uniquely situated to understand clients’ perspective in this area, because we’ve been candidates ourselves: Michael Murphy ran for Governor of New Jersey in 1997, and John Bartlett is a 4-times-elected Passaic County Commissioner and former candidate for U.S. Congress.

Murphy Orlando LLC has also provided legal counsel for numerous corporations, trade associations, advocacy organizations, and unions on participating in New Jersey political campaigns as contributors and through independent expenditures, while remaining in compliance with state and local pay-to-play laws.
